~ 5 young researchers will be offered 1 million JPY each to kick start their first project~

Cactus Foundation, by Cactus Communications (CACTUS), today launched Editage Grant for young researchers in Japan. The programme will select 5 young researchers and offer 1 million JPY each to help them explore their research ideas, launch their first research project, and gain global leadership skills as a researcher.

Commenting on the launch of the programme, Abhishek Goel, CEO & Co-founder, CACTUS, said, “Over the last few decades, scientific research has seen tremendous growth, making it a popular choice for young researchers. In the last 20 years, we’ve seen this industry evolve, but life as a young academic, even today, can be incredibly stressful owing to long hours, limited career prospects, and low wages. CACTUS started its journey in Japan and through the Editage Grant initiative, we want to give back to foster young talents in Japan and help them launch their first projects at a crucial period in their careers.”

CACTUS, a leading global science communications and technology company, started its journey in Japan. Celebrating its 20th year, Editage, the flagship CACTUS brand, has helped over 500,000 authors publish around 2 million research papers in scholarly journals in over 2,000 disciplines through editorial, translation, transcription, and publication support services globally. The Editage Grant is a means to give back to the researcher community in Japan by supporting young researchers in an early career stage and providing them with a platform that will nurture their academic journey. To further support this journey, Editage Grant will also provide workshops, seminars, courses, and one-on-one mentorships to the selected researchers.

Makoto Yuasa, Editage Regional Marketing Director, CACTUS Japan, said, “One of the main challenges faced by the Japanese research community is lack of support for young researchers. To address the issue, we initiated the Editage Edge programme back in 2016, however, we are taking this a notch up. With the launch of the Editage Grant, we will provide better monetary support and access to Editage and Researcher.Life services and tools to encourage the millennials to shape their research ideas and kick start their first research with an aim to become a global leader in academia.”

The grant applicants need to be residents of Japan and born on or after November 1, 1987, and on or before November 1, 2000 (age within 22-35 years), with a Masters degree or equivalent higher research degree to be eligible. Preference will be given to applicants who have received little to no funding in the last 365 days before April 26, 2023. Applicants will be required to submit their entries by January 31, 2023. Amongst the 20 finalists, 5 will be given a grant of 1 million JPY each, while the 15 runners-up will receive coupon worth 100,000 JPY each. They’ll be able to redeem the coupons to avail any Editage services.
