In partnership with European Association of Science Editors, Editage brings together global experts to discuss the responsible use of AI in shaping the future of peer review.
Editage, the flagship brand of Cactus Communications (CACTUS), is partnering with the European Association of Science Editors (EASE) to celebrate Peer Review Week 2025. Scheduled from September 15-19, 2025, the event celebrates the critical role of peer review in maintaining trust in research. This year’s theme “Rethinking Peer Review in the AI Era,” chosen by the global scholarly community through an open poll, focuses on the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in peer review and the broader scholarly publishing ecosystem.
Editage has consistently championed research integrity and innovation in scholarly publishing, and this commitment continues to shape its leadership in conversations on peer review and reimagining what this process at the heart of academia could look like in a tech-driven future. Building on its long track record of championing responsible AI use in academia, Editage and EASE are advancing the global dialogue by convening experts from the global scholarly publishing landscape, sparking insightful conversations and exploring diverse perspectives on the role AI can play to strengthen peer review and the critical role of human judgment and expertise in the process.
Akhilesh Ayer, CEO, Cactus Communications, said, “Peer review is the backbone of research integrity and at CACTUS, we believe AI and technology should serve as an enabler that enhances human expertise. Peer Review Week is a timely platform to move conversation beyond challenges to actionable solutions, ensuring that the future of peer review is both inclusive and ethical.”
Throughout the week, Editage will host an exciting line-up of activities, including:
- Live panel discussion: In the session From red flags to real fixes: Can AI help clean up scientific publishing? Rebecca Lawrence (F1000, Taylor & Francis), Laura Etchells (Emerald), Jennifer Wright (CUP), and Phill Jones (MoreBrains Cooperative) will discuss how AI is being integrated into editorial workflows and what it means for research integrity
- Podcast episodes: Lucy Threadgold (Emerald Publishing) and Dr. Chhavi Chauhan (AI ethicist) will tackle the biggest questions in peer review today
- Expert interviews: Insights from publishing leaders on AI readiness and the irreplaceable value of human judgment
Roohi Ghosh, Head, Researcher Success and Lifecycle Marketing at Cactus Communications and Co-Chair of the Peer Review Week Steering Committee 2025 added, “The conversation on AI and peer review has shifted from ‘if’ to ‘how,’ yet much of the focus remains on what not to do rather than the responsible use of AI. If we fail to build clear standards and trust, we risk either slowing innovation or undermining the very integrity peer review is meant to protect. My hope is that by 2030, peer review is a human–AI partnership, but this is possible only if we evolve responsibly.”
Mario Malicki, Stanford University, Chair of the EASE Peer Review Committee, said, “EASE is excited to continue our collaboration with Editage for the 2025 Peer Review Week. One of the EASE’s most viewed resources is the Peer Review Toolkit, and our Committee’s passions have always lied with all things related to peer review. As both our organizations have long been supporters of peer review education and training, every year we collaborate on webinars and talks. With recent AI advances, we are happy to engage on conversations around Peer Review in the AI era.”
Editage’s participation in Peer Review Week 2025 highlights its commitment to advancing research integrity, promoting innovation, and shaping conversations on AI’s role in academia. By engaging with publishers, researchers, societies, and the wider scholarly community, Editage reaffirms its role as a thought leader driving responsible dialogue at a pivotal moment for scholarly publishing.
The Peer Review Week event is open to all and will be available to all registrants to view on-demand, along with any additional resources from the event.
