January 8, 2025

Committed to ensuring the integrity of submitted manuscripts, the Science Partner Journal (SPJ) program at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has announced a partnership with Cactus Communications (CACTUS). The partnership leverages CACTUS’s Paperpal Preflight technology to uphold the highest standards of quality and ethical compliance for manuscripts submitted to the SPJs.

The SPJ program features online publications produced in collaboration with international research institutions, foundations, funders, and societies. The program reinforces best practices in peer review and publishing to collaborators. Through the partnership with CACTUS, SPJ manuscripts will be evaluated using Paperpal Preflight for Editorial Desk, a cutting-edge tool that conducts more than 23 AI-powered research integrity checks, as well as language quality and technical compliance checks. This AI-led review is combined with review by a Ph.D.-level expert to validate and present findings that should be addressed.

“The integrity of the scientific record is of paramount importance to AAAS and the Science Partner Journal program,” said Chris Reid, Director of Product and Publishing Development at AAAS. “Integrating Paperpal Preflight checks into the submission system for the Science Partner Journals will ensure the highest ethical standards while streamlining the publishing process.”

“This partnership between the Science Partner Journals and Paperpal Preflight for Editorial Desk is a great example of our community coming together to enhance quality standards, optimize the editorial process, and uphold the integrity of scientific publishing. We applaud SPJ for their proactive approach and are proud to be a part of this collaborative effort,” said Nikesh Gosalia, President, Global Academic & Publisher Relations at Cactus Communications.

The program is scheduled to launch across all SPJ titles in early 2025.
